John W. Davis - was an educator, diplomat and humanitarian. He has served as advisor to five presidents (Hoover, Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy, and holds at least 14 honorary degrees. Dr. Davis was president of West Virginia State College for 34 years. In 1979 he was the educational consultant of NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and Director of the Herbert Lehman Education Fund of New York City, and also served as a member of the Commission on lnstitutions of Higher Learning of the North Central Association of Colleges. He was decorated with the Order of Merit by the Republic of Liberia, and received the James Weldon Johnson Award and the Harmon Award for distinguished service in education. He was a trustee of Englewood Hospital, a past consultant to the Peace Corps., was a Member of the Center for the Study of the Presidency and is currently a Fellow of the Andrew Wellington Cordier International School of Columbia University.
