Laurel Hurley Butz - began her career as a dancer at the age of 2 1/2 and made her professional singing debut on Broadway as Kathie in the Student Prince at age 16. As a Naumberg winner, her N.Y. recital debut at Town Hall was a great critical success. In 1952, she became a leading soprano with N.Y. City Opera, singing 22 roles including Violetta (La Traviata) and Magnolia (ShowBoat). Engagements with the American Opera Society, N.B.C.-TV Opera, CBS-TV Omnibus followed. In 1955 she joined the Metropolitan Opera, singing Queen of the Night (Magic Flute), Olympia, Gilda, Sophie, & Susanna among 55 leading roles. She has sung with the Philadelphia Orches- tra, N.Y. Philharmonic, our own N.J. Symphony, the Stratford (Ont.) Festival, the Belgrade (Yugo.) and Berlin Festivals, and with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. She recorded with RCA Victor, Columbia and Everest Records and is now engaged in recitals and with her own vocal studio in Englewood. [1]
