Nordhoff Place was named for a friend of William Walter Phelps, Charles Nordhoff, who was editor of the New York Herald and a early resident of Alpine. "Nordhoff" becasme the name for the entire neighborhood around the intersection of Grand Ave and Sheffield Ave, which takes its name from Phelp's wife, the former Ellen Sheffield. Before it was dubbed "Nordhoff", the area had two previous names, Floraville, the Englewood side of the border with what was then Ridgefield Township, and Walton (Around Crystal lake) in what ws Ridgefield township at that time.
