He was State Superintendent of education for 20 years and a 2-term State Senator. Van Brunt organized the Bergen County Mutual Assurance Association, and, with Thomas Demarest, parented the Northern railroad , of which he was secretary, treasurer, and director. He owned the general store at Forest and Grand Aves. In 1860, his Palisade ave building, held Squire Miller's offices, the first post office (he was postmaster), and his second store was where the meeting took place to decide the name for the City. "Paliscena" and "Brayton" (A friend of J. Wyman Jones) were suggested, but "Englewood" was ultimately chosen. His Homestead was the showplace of the town.
